Outdoor Nature Exhibits for All Ages”

Exhibit Title: Huron River Ecosystem Match-up Game and Scavenger Hunt
Client: Rotary Club of Ann Arbor
Date: 2020
Location: Gallup Park in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Concept

This project presented a unique challenge: design outdoor interpretive displays that could withstand both the Michigan elements and the high energy of young explorers. Created for a park along the Huron River, these exhibits were built to encourage open-ended play and sensory engagement in a rugged, outdoor environment.

Process

Therefore, the core of our strategy was to move beyond static signage and create a tactile experience. We wanted to invite visitors to interact with the landscape. We designed two distinct sets of outdoor interpretive displays to facilitate this:

  • The Five Senses Discovery Series: Five custom signs guide guests through a sensory exploration of the park. Each sign includes a durable, beaded metal loop. This allows children to track their discoveries and engage in friendly competition while exploring the trails.
  • Vertical Turn-Block Matching Games: The graphic design challenge here was a double-sided matching game that highlights local flora and fauna. One side features the wildlife native to the park. The reverse showcases recreational activities like kayaking and fishing on the Huron River.

Built for the Elements

These outdoor interpretive displays utilize weather-resistant materials and robust mechanical elements, ensuring they remain functional and vibrant year-round. By blending play-based learning with structural durability, we helped the client transform a standard park trail into an interactive educational destination.
