“Interpretive Exhibit Design Renovation in Kentucky”
Client: Pennyroyal Area Museum
Date: 2019
Location: Hopkinsville, Kentucky
Concept
We were tasked with a critical mission for this full-scale renovation. We had to evolve a traditional, singular-perspective institution into a space for the entire community.
Originally, the exhibits told a limited story. They failed to capture the diverse voices of the area. They missed the “weird and wonderful” history that defines this community today.
Therefore, our goal was to implement a modern interpretive exhibit design strategy that honors quelled voices and brings suppressed histories into the light.
Process
First, starting fresh with the exhibits allowed us to bridge the gap between historical accuracy and modern engagement. We worked through hundreds of overlooked artifacts, formerly hidden in storage, to bring them into the gallery. This interpretive exhibit design process involved:
- Comprehensive Graphic Design: We designed every visual element in the space, from bird blinds to detailed exhibit labels, ensuring a cohesive and accessible visual language throughout the museum.
- Interactive Storytelling: By reimagining controversial and polarizing stories as opportunities for community dialogue, we created an environment that is tactile, interactive, and deeply rooted in its location.
- Narrative Redevelopment: We preserved the core historical facts of the original site but enhanced them through a modern lens, ensuring every artifact now tells a more complete story.
And the result is a fully accessible, renovated facility that invites every visitor to see themselves in their town’s history.
